Have you ever found the ultimate vintage piece with an unfortunate odor or realized during dinner that you wine-stained your favorite white t-shirt? I’ve been there! So, us fashion girls need to bound together and share our trade secrets. How do you tackle that stain or fix a scratch in your new leather bag? This one is devastating, I know. Keep scrolling below for the 10 fashion hacks I swear by.
Hack #1: Breaking in Leather Jackets
Leather jackets are staple investment pieces that wear in so beautifully that you end up living in them year round. But, when you first buy them, they can be a little stiff. To break in leather jackets, just turn on your shower really hot, let the steam build and step into the bathroom with your jacket on. The moisture softens the leather, molding it to your body. I recommend not bending your arms or you’ll get permanent creases!
Hack #2: Lemon Juice on Underarm Stains
Keep your white t-shirts really white and spray lemon juice under the arms to prevent staining before putting them in the wash.
Hack #3: Moisturizer for Leather Scratches
If you just bought a new investment bag and suddenly find a scratch, fear not, remove scratches on leather with a tiny bit of moisturizer on a cotton bud. You can easily overdo it here, so be careful and I recommend trying oil-free.
Hack #4: Break in Heels with Socks
Heels can be comfortable, I promise. It just takes some breaking in. When your new heels arrive, wear a thicker sock and walk around your house with them for a bit–maybe even a few days. The heel starts to stretch a bit and when you finally go to wear them, your feet will thank you.
Hack #5: White Wine > Red Wine
There are some instances where white wine is superior to red wine and when it comes to fashion, white wine wins. It actually removes red wine stains! I’m not sure the exact science behind this one, but it works. If you gently blot the red wine-stained area with white wine, soaking it completely, it will lift the stain completely.
Hack #6: Salt Water for Vintage-Like T-Shirts
There are at-home solutions to vintage-level t-shirts. You can get that same soft, lived-in feel by leaving your new tees in salt water (one quart water, one half cup of salt) for about three days and then wash normally!
Hack #7: How to Remove Odors From Clothes
If you’ve recently come across a new vintage find while thrifting, like this amazing blazer I found and posted here, you can easily remove smells by spraying them with a mixture of one part vodka and two parts water. Then just dry clean or hand wash depending on the fabric.
Hack #8: Remove Deodorant Stains With Denim
Denim is so multi-purpose, I love it. Quickly rub a pair of jeans on the deodorant mark and the friction will cause the stain to rub away. I recommend testing a small patch first to avoid any color transfer or not using denim that has not been washed to avoid dye bleeding.
Hack #9: Restore Shine to Patent Shoes With Windex
Patent leather is a great statement. Especially a good red patent shoe. If you’ve owned a pair of patent shoes, you know that they will scuff easily. You can just use windex to safely remove marks and restore sheen to patent shoes.
Hack #10: Stop Buttons from Falling Off
Finding a good tailor is the ultimate life hack, but if you do not have one in your contacts just yet, paint a coat of clear nail polish over the threads of a loose button to keep it from falling off. It will hold for just long enough!
