Denim isn’t only for F/W fashion — it’s a year-round material and I’m here today, writing before you, to make that case.
All hyperboles aside, if you follow me on Instagram, you know I’m a denim girl through and through. It’s on my vision board to design a capsule collection with one of my favorite brands, and maybe, a line of my own someday! Suffice it to say, I have A LOT of experience with the fabric, and some tried-and-true combinations that I’m going to share with you today.
A small aside: some of you might know this, but, in a past life, I was a stylist. So, in addition to my recreational hobby of putting outfits together for my own viewing pleasure, I was, at one time, actually a professional! Ok, back to the task at hand…
When you think of denim, what traditionally comes to mind as a natural pairing is colder weather, sweaters, and maybe even some apple picking. But the world of denim goes beyond your winter wardrobe. Every year, I so look forward to breaking out my “summer denim,” which is decidedly different from their winter counterparts.
The Jean Short
It’s easy for this item to, without much effort on the wearer’s part, engender notions of country music and the once-world-renowned singer, Jessica Simpson. It’s my mission to help you avoid those representations. Next time you reach for your favorite pair of Daisy Dukes, try airing on the side of the Bermuda short, pairing them with an oversized blazer, a white t-shirt, and a pair of chic sandals or ballet flats.
White Denim
If you subscribe to traditional fashion rules, you no doubt know that it’s *officially* the season of white jeans. This year, try taking your favorite pair out for a spin in the evening (trust us), complimenting them with a silk camisole and a pair of heeled sandals. Throw on a tiny purse and, bam, you’re golden. I’d recommend a cropped and flared option like the one linked below.
The Jean Jumpsuit
My motto with this piece is: go big or go home. You may look like a character out of That ‘70s Show, but it’s totally ok. In fact, if you’re referred to in the streets as Jackie Burkhart when rocking this look, you know you’ve nailed the vibe. Keep it simple with accessories and let the jumpsuit speak for itself (more is less here). One piece of advice: leave the Farah Fawcett hair at home — unless you’re a method actor, in which case, go for it.
